On December 6, 2024, a historical moment took place in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra (Kyiv, Ukraine) – first military prayer breakfast. Representatives of religious denominations, military chaplains and Ukrainian defenders met at this event.

With the beginning of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, pastoral care for military personnel acquired special significance. Supporting the moral and psychological state of soldiers, their motivation and satisfying their spiritual and religious needs have become an important component of the successful completion of combat missions.

Representatives of various faiths began to visit war zones. They arrived there as volunteers and volunteers to provide spiritual support and humanitarian assistance. However, their legal status was not clearly defined, which created the need to regulate the presence of such persons in the locations of military units and in the positions of units.

At the end of 2021 (versions 2022, 2023, 2024) came into force in Ukraine Law of Ukraine “On the Military Chaplaincy Service”which regulated the activities of military chaplains – representatives of religious organizations – in units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard of Ukraine, other military formations created in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine, as well as the State Border Service of Ukraine.

President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky, speaking at an eventemphasized the importance of chaplaincy in war.

“In unity we will get through this war and achieve a just peace for Ukraine,” Zelensky said.

Chaplains perform a complex and demanding mission, providing spiritual support on the front lines. They pray with the soldiers, help overcome moral difficulties and strengthen the spirit of the soldiers.
