On September 9, 2024, the 7th ministerial meeting was held in Riyadh Strategic Dialogue between the Russian Federation and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)chaired by the heads of the Foreign Ministries Russia and QatarLavrov and al-Thani. The meeting was also attended by the foreign ministers of Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman.
The main topic of discussion was the “Palestinian-Israeli conflict.” During the meeting, the need for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip was once again emphasized. As The Russian Foreign Ministry states“the need to consolidate international efforts to create conditions for a peaceful settlement that provides for the creation of an independent Palestinian state was confirmed.”
GCC – a regional organization created in 1981, includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
In their statements, Lavrov and the Arab representatives repeatedly spoke out against Israel, ignoring the reality of the difficult situation in the region. Lavrov accused the US and the EU of destroying the Middle East “quartet” that included Russia, the US, the EU and the UN, and said that they “tried to introduce their initiatives, but were absolutely unsuccessful.” This accusation not only demonstrates Russia’s propaganda approach, but also its desire to undermine any efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully.
Lavrov noted with obvious satisfaction that “the world has changed a lot” and that “the centuries-old hegemony of the West is becoming a thing of the past.” These words indicate that Russia is actively trying to discredit and weaken Western countries, including the US and the EU, in its geopolitical game.
“The GCC is becoming one of the important independent centers in the emerging multipolar world order,” Lavrov said, emphasizing the growing influence of anti-Western forces in the region.
The meeting focused on the “crisis situation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict” and the “unprecedented escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip.” However, the participants unanimously supported an approach that essentially ignores real efforts for a peaceful settlement and humanitarian aid, focusing exclusively on their own political interests and manipulations.
Russia and Arab countries are actively acting against Israel, which is due to several key factors.
FirstlyRussia is seeking to expand its influence in the Middle East and is competing with the US and the EU for influence in this strategically important region. Israel, a key ally of the West, finds itself in the crosshairs of Russian policy.
Secondly, Russia's support for Iranwhich actively opposes Israel, also plays a role. Joint projects and military cooperation between Russia and Iran exacerbate tensions between Russia and Israel.
