US Secretary of State Antony Blinken plans to visit Britain on Monday, September 9, 2024, a week after London suspended some arms export licenses to Israel, Reuters reported.
During his visit, which runs through Tuesday, Blinken will open the U.S.-Britain Strategic Dialogue, reaffirming the special relationship, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.
The minister also plans to meet with officials to discuss a range of issues, including the Indo-Pacific region, the AUKUS defense pact between Washington, Australia and Britain, the situation in the Middle East and efforts to support Ukraine in the fight against Russian invasion.
The UK announced on September 2 that it was temporarily cancelling 30 of 350 licences to export arms to Israel because of the risk the equipment could be used to violate international humanitarian law in the Gaza Strip.
The administration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris is under pressure from critics of the Gaza war to stop sending weapons to Israel.
CIA Director William Burns, the chief US negotiator to end the war in Gaza, said in London on Saturday, September 7, that a more detailed ceasefire solution would be proposed in the coming days.
It should be noted that the White House will host talks next week between the US President and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with the agenda expected to include discussions of the situation in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip, as well as other important issues.
