Zelensky named security guarantees for Ukraine: missiles, protection based on the Israeli model and joining the EU

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview NBC News on February 16, 2025, spoke about the security guarantees Ukraine needs to defend itself in the context of a full-scale war with Russia that has been going on for almost three years.

Security guarantees: what does Ukraine need

Zelensky was asked about the security guarantees that Ukraine wants from the United States. In response, the president touched upon not only American partners, but also other countries.

“A large package of missiles as a preventive step. We will not use them before any invasion. But if they do, we will do it quickly (use missiles – Ed.). But they will be deployed on our territory, not like it was before the full-scale invasion, when the White House imposed sanctions and gave us weapons after the invasion,” he emphasized.

According to Zelensky, Ukraine needs a large army that can deter possible aggression.

“This is very important from a psychological point of view. If Putin understands that we have the same size army as Russia, he will not dare to invade again,” the Ukrainian president said.

Investments are another important component of security. Zelensky is confident that Russia will not attack enterprises where Ukraine cooperates with American partners.

“I think Putin will not attack with missiles the production facilities where we are partners with America,” he said.

In addition, Ukraine is counting on quick accession to the European Union, which will become an economic guarantee of security.

“The European Union is very important because it is a special market for us. And the EU is very interested in our products. We should be on the same financial terms with the European Union. We want to be a member, we share the same values, we have the same legislation. This is part of the economic security guarantees for us – to be immediately part of the EU, this is also very important,” Zelensky noted.

Security guarantees according to the Israeli scenario

Zelensky paid special attention to the Israeli security model. He cited the reaction of Western countries to Iran’s attack on Israel as an example.

“And one more thing we need. We really don’t know how it works, but when Iran attacked Israel, the US, France, Great Britain and other guys, although Israel is not a member of NATO… began to protect the Israeli people from Iran’s missiles. Israel is not in NATO. This means that it has specific security guarantees from the US, France, Great Britain and other allies. I think we really need it,” Zelensky said.
